When you hear South-East Asia, what is the first country you would think of?
There are a few SEAsian countries that are particularly well known due to its touristic appeal, such as: Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam… However, did you know that South-East Asia comprises of 11 main countries in total?:
Malaysia
Laos
Vietnam
Singapore
Thailand
Cambodia
Philippines
Myanmar
East Timor
Indonesia
Brunei
I have yet to visit all eleven countries of the South-East Asia region, but- and correct me if I’m wrong, fellow South-East Asians- there is this unspoken affinity amongst fellow SEAsians; it’s like this huge neighbourhood of SEAsian-ess, and you just can’t help but feel like a piece to this whole SEAsian-hood.
Rather than go into historic culture, I wanted to approach this series in a different way- I wanted to introduce the homeland via digital media.
The rise of Asian entertainers and content creators (inland or overseas-based) is astronomical and their style and works I feel are hugely relevant to the representation of the Asian heritage, both its evolution and displacement. The taking-back-ownership of stereotypes and transposing them into various media, entertainment and, especially, comedic streams speak volumes on a growing facet of Asian identity that advocates respect, visibility and individuality.
Most of the links are Youtube videos, but from time to time there will be few other social media/digital platforms links which I feel may be a more suited representation. Do bear in mind that there are so many different media available and they are constantly growing- there are always endless possibilities.

To start this series off, I will be introducing none other than my homeland: Malaysia.
Where do I even begin with this beautiful country?
I’ve been following Malaysian content creator, The Ming Thing, for YEARS. Him alongside other Malaysian Youtube content creators: Dan Khoo Productions, MGag TV, The Grim Film are just a few of the many content creators that exemplifies Malaysian digital creativity.
One word: EPIC.
“How To Know You’re Malaysian” by The Ming Thing
“Sincerely, The End.” By TheGRIMFILM
This piece, I feel, is one of the most underrated short films, ever.
