If there’s one thing that is lacking in my diet in the UK, it’s the sun.
Plus, having a lifestyle where you’re mostly in-studio means getting even less of whatever wisps of sunlight there are available during the day.
Therefore, when I came across Red Orchard to review, of course it caught my attention! This vitamin D supplement was in the form of a strawberry-flavoured snack (yum). No way I wasn’t going to give it a taste test!
So, what IS Red Orchard?
Red Orchard is a breakthrough product in food technology delivering 100% vitamin D* in the form of a tasty snack. Until now most Vitamin D supplements have only been available in pills, powders, drops, sprays and tablets.
Red Orchard delivers 100% of your recommended Daily allowance of Vitamin D in a delicious organic gel snack. Each 40g pouch contains less than 20 calories per serving with no added sugar, it is a convenient and delicious way to boost Vitamin D intake and can fit anywhere from gym bags to handbags to child’s lunch boxes. The product is particularly popular for busy parents, mums and dads have found it to be a really great way to keep their children’s vitamin intake topped up. - Ariatu PR
The pouch reminds me of Capri-Sun- literally re-living the 90’s childhood snack time!
The texture/consistency, though described as gel, seems to be more like the jelly/soft agar texture, which is completely to my taste since I grew up LOVING these types of treats. Win for me.
The ingredients include: water, organic honey, organic strawberry flavouring, gelling agents (Xanthan gum and locust bean gum), organic mushroom powder, and citric acid.
So, what is it with vitamin D again? Lets take a blast to the high school past and have a quick recap on some facts surrounding vitamin D:
Vitamin D is the very nutrient that keeps your bones, teeth, and muscles healthy.
Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies in the world. It is especially common amongst young women, infants, elderly, and people who have dark skin.
There is new advice from Public Health England that advises adults and children over the age of 1 to take supplements of containing 10mcg (400 IU/International Units) of Vitamin D, particularly during autumn and winter.
Vitamin D deficiency can cause muscle weakness; intensify bone loss; and increase the risk of fractures. In severe cases, vitamin D deficiency can cause rickets in children and, in adults, osteomalacia (softening of bones).
Taking vitamin D supplements are recommended by the NHS as intake through food sources alone is not enough.
So… What’s the verdict?
Positives:
✔ It definitely IS tasty (especially if you love strawberry-flavoured snacks)
✔ Easy to consume and swallow (no pun intended)
✔ It is small, slim and convenient - just pop it in the bag and take it anywhere and everywhere
✔ Each individual pouch is sealed = no spillages!
✔ The bright red and white colour scheme (high-key) reminds me to take and top up my Vitamin D!
✔ Vegetarian-friendly
To consider:
? Packaging - the packaging seems to be the layering of aluminium and plastic which is very difficult to take apart and recycle.
? Would love to see more flavours in the near future.
Final verdict:
All in all, I’ve found this snack to be quite a breakthrough for nutrient supplements, as it is not only providing vitamin D intake, but its visual aesthetic also invites and encourages one to take the supplement and work it into their daily diet. Although there is nothing wrong with taking other forms of supplements such as pills and tablets, it is specifically a step in the right direction in providing an accessible source of vitamin D for children and people with disabilities.
