Believe it or not…
There was once a woman by the name of Thelma Adams that protested against the controversial European milk quota of 1984 by dressing up as Cleopatra and bathing in milk on the streets of Carmathen, Wales. This spectacle happened alongside 10 other women and made the key statement about how it was actually cheaper to bathe in milk than water.
Knowing that (the woman) is still alive and well and still actively campaigning for the Welsh dairy industry, makes this story even more epic.
That was but one of the many interesting stories of the British cheese and dairy industry that I’d come across that fateful evening.
I was invited to experience the International Cheese & Dairy Awards (ICA)’s London cheese and wine launch event at The Lumiere - in conjunction with the Nantwich Show at Chesire taking place on 30th & 31st July 2019- to experience what would be the “biggest and best” event yet of the ICA.
With over 5000+ cheese entries featured at the ICA and judged by 300 cheese and dairy experts, a supreme champion of the dairy world is waiting to be discovered among the sea of cheese!
One of the highlights for me was the Welsh vintage and leek cheddar by Dragon Wales. See, leek is a vegetable that is rarely paired with cheese in Oriental cuisine, so to taste leek and cheese together and discover the greatness of this combination, really left a tasteful impression on me (no pun intended).
Another favourite of mine was from the award-winning Belton Farm’s Leicester cheese - I literally annihilated my whole block of cheese within 24 hours of taking it home. The taste was specially rich and wholesome, and kept you (me) wanting to savour more.
After some delicious canapes, cheese-tasting, and cheese discussions, we were introduced to the The Cheese Academy’s Heritage Project, led by director Charlie Turnbull. This project is a fascinating and brave initiative to seek and preserve Britain’s agriculture and cheese-making tradition, history and knowledge. Read more and find out how you may be able to help this initiative.
The evening followed on with wine and cheese pairing, led by Richard Paul of Bradburys - and I’d have to say, although a classic, I’d never thought that the Tawny port and gorgonzola pairing would be so DIVINE.
As the evening drew to a close, attendees were gifted with goodie bags as they left and I was in awe of the amount of cheese inside! Our fridge was well-stocked with cheese for WEEKS. Don’t believe me? See this:
